What's Green Bikes for Peace project?
The Green Bikes for Peace project was a 30-day-long biking tour crossing 5 countries, with youth participating. The aim of the trip was to draw attention to sustainability. Thus various programs and subprojects are organized before and during the trip, in order to demonstrate different aspects of sustainability in a creative way. Our project had many partners and sponsors. The detailed route and dates of the trip. The development of the project can be followed in the diary!
Project diary
About the project planning, realisation and the results by a theme specific way and hopefully about our success.

A door has closed so that another can open
30 days, 900 kilometres, countless memories and the last active day. It is difficult to say or write anything wise. The sun shone on the balcony of Nap Hostel. In the morning after a joint cooking session and preparation for the presentation in the afternoon we rode off to the workshop of ICWiP: We were really happy and impressed that so many people were interested in our experiences, thank you very much. In the interview (given to the public Radio and press in Germany), we could feel the lively atmosphere.

Europe on two wheels, Pécs, we are here finally!
Although we set off from Mohács early, we were already sweating during the morning exercise. After the first terrible section on a road, we headed to South, and reached the “capital” of Portugieser, but we had to stop in every village to drink and refresh ourselves with water. After a quick lunch and wine tasting dark clouds started to gather, accompanied by strong wind. Our first fear was not grounded, but as we left Palkonya, the shower arrived.

Goodbye to the Danube, arrival at Mohács
After a slow wake-up, which took us an entire morning we rode back to the bike path, on another hot day. After a quick break in Dunafalva, another splash followed, and then we proceeded to Mohács on the left bank of the Danube. We had been cycling on the banks of the Danube, and we knew we had to say goodbye to it on this day eventually. A fish soup from the Danube, then there was some discussion on the yard of the dormitory about the events of the past few weeks.

Sunset in Gemenc
From Budapest we had an adventurous trip to Szekszárd. The journey by train however had some pleasant surprises. The trip impressed all the 17 of us, sitting on the little, red, absolutely biker-friendly train. In Szekszárd we fitted our bikes and proceeded to the Gemenc forest. We could see birds, wild boar, deer from the bikepath, then we arrived in Baja in the heat, followed by many mosquitos, which is a natural companion of floods, of course.

A busy city in the heat, sweaty conditions, sad reality
We had to face unpleasant surprises at the last stop of our comparative analysis. At the abridged sightseeing tour in 40 degrees in the city centre we could see war-like infrastructure, an insensible number of cars and extraordinarily bad air quality. It was really bad to explain to an international group how and why this city, which had ideal conditions, got to this point. Of course, beyond all these bad experiences we visited the most beautiful and interesting points in the city and we saw the new infrastuctural solutions which may project a nicer future.

Sightseeing in Budapest with the Hungarian Cyclists' Club and Tűzraktér
After the evening on the A38 we rested a bit in the morning, except for the the bike power plant, which presented the possibility to produce energy in a sustainable way at the press conference of a huge IT company presenting their 0 Watt products. We were happy that they had contacted us as it showed that there is interest for our power plant. The business sector and NGOs together for sustainable energy production. Lovely :-)

Highlight of the tour in Budapest, at the A38 ship
After a chillout in the Danube bend we proceeded towards Vác, where we could start to feel the not too positive features of the Hungarian section. Here there were three falls, fortunately none of them were serious. After eating „lecsó” in Göd we went on highway nr. 2 and Váci út, which dispersed the last illusions of the company about the conditions of Hungarian cycling roads. Some cyclists welcomed the group at the Budapest sign, and we went on to Jászai Mari square where a nice activist offered Túró Rudi to us. After a short press conference we occupied our hostel.

Eurochallenge 6 - towards Budapest along the Danube
An enthusiastic part of the group started off early in the morning, while the majority took the distance between Győr and Almásfűzítő by train. The group tried out how we can place 20 bikes on the new train of the Hungarian Railways. The surprisingly dodgy station of Almásfüzítő projected a quite negative Hungarian section. Unfortunately, many sections of the cycling infrastructure are missing, so our group did not stop until Esztergom (except for the self-inflicted technical break because of Laurin's brake).

Profession, profession, special sightseeing, wine spritzel
In spite of the really long previous night everybody worked enthusiastically at the workshop in the morning, where Petra Szakonyi represented the city of Győr, and Júlia Keglovits represented the Famulus Hotel. After presenting their "company" and work for the first time we presented our photo-illustrated presentation, where we showed the experiences of our tour. Even we ourselves were astonished to see how much we have seen and what has happened to us.

The sturgeon has returned to Győr, we made it dance, then ourselves
There are rainy days when cyclists can only hope it will stop soon. This would have been especially important on that day when the most important cultural event took place, coordinated by Péter Pusker. However, the sky did not have mercy on us on that day. In the morning Zoli Fűzfa invited us into the visitor centre again, where he put us into the picture with the whole Bős-Nagymaros problem, and also showed the alternative rehabilitation proposal of SZITE University, which will provide a long-term development opportunity for the region, especially in eco-tourism.

Fairy island in the Szigetköz
In the morning the group had excellent backwind to cycle towards Hungary after the short section in Slovakia, on an ideal bike path along the Danube. On the way we stopped to have a bath, then we had a look at the concrete dams of the Cunovo reserve, where the group, in the meantime becoming expert in water management could see what human power is capable of.

Bratislava, strapacka, Svihaj Suhaj, music and dance
We left Austria, and reached Bratislava. The cycle path reaches the city near the motorway, and the view is really surprising. We felt we hit a metropolis again. The Bratislava bike messengers, Gábor and Feri welcomed us, showed us our accommodation and told us about the situation of cycling in the city, and the opportunities of cultural cooperation. As we had only one day in Bratislava, we were a bit busy. We had a quick dinner, then we went to the Main Square to chill out with music, exhibitions and dance.

History of the Donauauen, with frogs and snakes
We cycled out from Vienna through the Donauinsel, left behind the oil tanks of Vienna to enter the National Park of Donauauen, which had had a fabulous history. The weather was really nice for cycling, the routes a little less suitable because of the flood. We almost arrived on time to Orth, led by Roland, where the display centre of the National Park waited for us, represented by our guide, ranger Barbara, who was really entertaining. In the evening we had a real barbecue in nature, followed by a big sleep, welcomed by everyone.

Bike promotion spiced up with the Danube, the busiest Monday
On this day we wake up very early as we took part in an “experiment” in the morning, where the transportation options of Vienna were compared in practice. A bike messenger, the whole group of bikers, one person on public transport and a car started off at the same time to buy a bunch of sunflowers in a Vienna shop, and take it to a café in the city centre. And to deliver it to a special person, the Minister of the Environment in Austria, who was invited to the press conference of the Klimatour.at, together with the Green Bikes for Peace team.

Vienna from a biker's point of view on a Sunday afternoon
Our official program for today started at 3 pm on the boat with a workshop on the basic theories of cycling facicties and the cooperation with the local government, presented by Alec Hager and Fidelio (IG Fahrrad). After the theoretical discussion we grabbed our bikes to be able to examine the developed local infrastructure in practice. Roland (IG Fahrrad) spiced up the 3-hour-long tour with cultural and historical stories. In the evening we had dinner at a university-community place where cooking was a real civil action with the participation of all volunteers.

We took Vienna, we jumped with bikes into the Danube at Donauinsel
Leaving Tulln we only had 40 kilometers left to arrive to our 3-day-long programme in Vienna.
After a quick bath in the Danube halfway, we assembled our mobile sound system to enter Vienna on the Donauinsel.
Our accomodation is on a "schoolship" stationing on the Danube which gives all of us a real Danube experience.
In the evening we were invited to a bike festival where we put up again our mobile exhibition and presented ourselves.

Getting closer to Vienna, the tour has reached Tulln
After the fascinating night in Krems the company had a nice breakfast, then we summarised the professional experiences of the past few days. Fortunately today we had an easier itinerary, so we started off only in the afternoon. We saw a few more waterworks and the Danube riverbank has become our constant companion. We shifted our itinerary between the Northern and the Southern path, and we have approached the capital of Austria at last.

The Wachau region, the miracle of the Danube valley
Finally we had to cycle a little less on this day, and the tour followed the most beutiful path of the Danube valley. We started off from Melk early to avoid the heat. Our day of cycling was spent among beautiful ruins of castles and vineyards. We arrived in Krems relatively early, and after putting up at our accommodation we went to the swimming pool to chill out a little.

A really hot day on our bikes
After breakfast we rolled down on the bank of the Danube, and we followed the South cycle path to Melk. We cycled another 60 kilometres. Although we started early, the company had to face a real heat at noon, and the progress was also hindered by several technical problems. Finally we tried the typical Austrian sausage called Bratwurst, the bikers' drink Radler and chilling out under the trees.

Starting off along the Danube, we are on EuroVelo6
After two days in Linz we set off on the Donauradweg towards Ardegger. As we left the industrial area of Linz, we proceeded along the riverbank of the Danube, cycling and chatting all the way long, like on a cycling excursion, as on the cycling path is rather a road 3 metres wide where cycling in groups is ideal. On the first really hot day the group proceeded really well, we had to reach Ardegger Stift until 4 P.M. After the days of flood in the area earlier we could use the cycling road almost in its full length.
