What's Green Bikes for Peace project?

The Green Bikes for Peace project was a 30-day-long biking tour crossing 5 countries, with youth participating. The aim of the trip was to draw attention to sustainability. Thus various programs and subprojects are organized before and during the trip, in order to demonstrate different aspects of sustainability in a creative way. Our project had many partners and sponsors. The detailed route and dates of the trip. The development of the project can be followed in the diary!

exhibition and dance in Bratislava

We left Austria, and reached Bratislava. The cycle path reaches the city near the motorway, and the view is really surprising. We felt we hit a metropolis again. The Bratislava bike messengers, Gábor and Feri welcomed us, showed us our accommodation and told us about the situation of cycling in the city, and the opportunities of cultural cooperation. As we had only one day in Bratislava, we were a bit busy. We had a quick dinner, then we went to the Main Square to chill out with music, exhibitions and dance.

1. business city without bikers but already with couriers

As we heard from Gábor Bindics (who is a really amazing guy, with lots of nice ideas in many many different things), in the city we can recognize, it's almost totally without bikers. Our group with more than 20 bikers semmed like a Critical Mass. I really enjoyed this feeling, but I can imagine how hard will be the development of the cycling-culture in this city.

The problem is that lot of people only go to work to the capital, but live farther from it. That's why it's easier to use cars and highways instead of bikes. To change these situation, it's necessery to be a higher decision. Instead of building highways the decisionmaker should cultivate the development of public transport with bike-carrying-capacity of course.

But at least it's a nice achievement, that the first messenger company, Svihaj Suhaj has already started to work. I think in Hungary we can thank a lot for the bike couriers to spread the cycling-culture, i hope that will be the same in Bratislava, too. All the best for Gábor and Feri!!!

2. Really appreciate this post.

Really appreciate this post. It’s hard to sort the good from the bad sometimes, but I think you’ve nailed it!

3. the beginning for me

I joined the tour here, in Bratislava. Dóra, Ákos and I'd taken a train from Budapest to Mosónmagyaróvár, then pedaled to Bratislava as a warm up for the tour.
It was really nice to realize how many open minded and kind folks gathered together for this trip. The first impressions were really positive. I must tell you that I'm really bad in memorizing names, but after playing the name game, and maybe because of the stimulizing atmosphere of the group, I just knew everyone's name by heart.
Having consumed the strapacka and few bottles of good slovakian beer, we made an exibition, played music and had huge fun in the main square. To our great satisfaction, lots of people joined our pretty unprompted party, which was, at least for me, rather euphoric.
