What's Green Bikes for Peace project?

The Green Bikes for Peace project was a 30-day-long biking tour crossing 5 countries, with youth participating. The aim of the trip was to draw attention to sustainability. Thus various programs and subprojects are organized before and during the trip, in order to demonstrate different aspects of sustainability in a creative way. Our project had many partners and sponsors. The detailed route and dates of the trip. The development of the project can be followed in the diary!

Sightseeing in Budapest with the Hungarian Cyclists' Club and Tűzraktér

After the evening on the A38 we rested a bit in the morning, except for the the bike power plant, which presented the possibility to produce energy in a sustainable way at the press conference of a huge IT company presenting their 0 Watt products. We were happy that they had contacted us as it showed that there is interest for our power plant. The business sector and NGOs together for sustainable energy production. Lovely :-)

After a quick lunch in Holdudvar in Margitsziget Bori Ruh gave a presentation on BoB (Budapest on bike) project, and the Periféria Foundation. At the workshop our favourite topics were discussed, including the EVS, voluntary work, the situation of alternative education in Hungary and the NGO cooperation network. After we popped in the office of the Hungarian Cyclists’ Club, where we had to face 30 degrees and the presentations of János and Ders about the operation model, projects and achievements of the HCC.

In the evening we were invited into the centre of NGO artistic culture, we were informed about everything concerning the past and present of Tűzraktér by Zoli Balla, and we were fascinated by the work done there. Many thanks, Orsi and Zoli!

1. hungarian services, hospitality

I was really ashamed of the first day in Bp. There was actually no bike roud to reach our beautiful capital, it was terribly hot and with the lot of cars very awfull. When I heard, the hostel forgot us, and we haven't got any place my reaction was just: "Of course, welcome in Hungary!". And I really hate these feeling.

Of course we solved the problems (actually no problems, just challenges :) ), we get place in a very interesting flat, but the group was shared and we couldn't make breakfasts and dinners together, the cooking was really great challeng (thanx for Orsi, Vivi, Ákos and all helper) and I missed a lot the common-feeling in these time.
Somewhere it's very nice that we (i mean Hungarians) are loose and flexieble, but if we would like to offer high quality services the flexibility is not enough.

I feel a great gap between the professional services and the alternative places in Hungary. We have some very developed, nice place with very high quality where a tourist or guest can have the best service (of course it's not too cheap) and enjoy the hungarian hospitality (because i think that is something that we really have!). And nowadays we have more and more alternative places, where lot of volunteer working, most of them are non-profit organisations and they are very usefull and efficent to support young artist, alternative programs, interesting ideas.
But I missed the middle way. Where are the services for a so called "middle class", for young families, middle age people, for tourist who haven't got so much money, or who don't want to have a place in a posh hotel, but not enough losse or alternative to go to a hostel.
I think we have really few offers for middle age people, and it's a big fault, but of course also a big opportunity to make something new and good in our nice country.

2. doors are opening...

Tuzrakter was a great place to be.
we could get through the whole house, and could see it with different eyes - not just as a club, but an organic, working art centre.
and some doors might open for a future project; I am so excited....

3. velodrom

This beatiful place will always be in my heart.
the Millenaris Velodrom is a forgotten trasure of a time when kings gave their people areas to play and to enjoy. because the city goverment doesnt care about this place anymore, the people who love the millenaris have organised them to keep this for us. the youth and the future.
the parks and the castle crated for the worldexebition 1984 are the best places in budapest.
